Quick Teaching Tips During Car Rides!

Families in America, spend a considerable amount of time commuting to and
from school, soccer practice, play rehearsals and playdates; not to mention,
Saturday errands and birthday parties. Why not turn what ordinarily would have
been time spent on suggestive or mind-numbing music laced with questionable
lyrics to an opportunity to reinforce educational material and perhaps teach new
skill sets?

Car rides presents an excellent opportunity to discuss what was learned in
school and expand on it. You may even be able to make a connection to a life
experience or even expand into cross-subject concepts.

Here are some suggestions to get you going:

  • Create an A-B-C game for kindergarteners such as, taking turns coming
up with an object that starts with an assigned letter. This reinforces ABC
    skills and sharpens mental agility.

  • In teaching even and odd numbers, have your child take notice of street
    addresses.

  • Play mental math games. Adjust difficulty to child's learning capabilities.
Super for developing quick and efficient computation skills!

  • Explore basic science concepts such as why the sun seems to follow the
car to a young inquiring mind.

  • Laws of motion can come into play when explaining your car movement
and its relations to other cars on the road.

  • Talk about things like construction projects that seem to happen more
often in places where asphalt is used as opposed to cities (or countries)
that makes more use of concrete.

In other words, play with the idea. Become creative in developing new games.
Once you've come up with one, it will be easier to develop more.

As always, persist joyfully and without pressure! Make it fun and you may
actually have kids who look forward to car rides with Mommy and Daddy!

Good luck!
